Love over fear, an act of defiance.

In the heart of Kyiv, an unconventional artwork speaks of resilience and love. An anti-tank blockade, typically synonymous with brutality, is transformed into a canvas of hope.

This harsh-looking metal blockade has been painted with traditional Ukrainian patterns in vibrant hues of yellow, green, pink, and purple. When I saw this piece I felt it was a beacon of love over fear, an act of defiance.

This transformation of brutality into beauty sends a powerful message, a reminder that even in times of conflict, the human spirit possesses the profound ability to choose love over fear.

The concept of choosing love over fear is not just a theme captured in this artwork; it is a philosophy that I live by. It’s a call to action, a commitment to seeing beyond the immediate challenges and embracing a perspective that fosters compassion, understanding, and unity.

Reflecting on this concept brings to mind the opening quote in my book:

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.

–Khalil Gibran

Choosing love over fear, helps us through difficulties of life with love as our guide. Acknowledging that the path of love may be challenging and fraught with potential pain. The wings of love may carry us to heights unseen, yet the hidden sword within them may also bring wounds. In the context of war-torn Kyiv, this quote becomes a poignant reflection on the artist’s journey – a journey marked by love for their country, their people, and the resilience that emerges from such love.

Choosing love over fear, as a life philosophy, is not an evasion of challenges; but a courageous confrontation of them. External and internal fears persist, irrespective of the circumstances, but the act of opening up to love and listening to one’s intuition becomes a guiding force. It is an acknowledgment that, despite the uncertainties and dangers, love has the power to transcend fear and lead us to a place of deeper understanding and connection.

The Ukrainian artist, through their transformative act, teaches us that even in the harshest of circumstances, the human spirit can bloom with creativity, courage, and love. This anti-tank blockade, now a symbol of defiance and hope, stands as a testament to the capacity of individuals to choose love over fear, even when faced with the most formidable challenges. It encourages us all to embrace the transformative power of love in our own lives, fostering resilience and unity in the face of adversity.
